AAEC Tutoring Policy

The Athletic Academic Enhancement Center (AAEC) is pleased to offer tutoring sessions to student-athletes. Tutoring is designed to act as a supplement to the interactive learning proves of the classroom and as a support to every student-athlete. Tutoring is not designed to replace classroom instruction or the interaction between the professor and the student-athlete.

When faced with a challenge in class, a student-athlete should first try to complete the assigned work and approach the professor during specified office hours. If additional help is needed, tutoring can be requested by an academic advisor in the AARC office or through the Gradesfirst website.

SCHEDULING TUTORING SESSIONS

If a student-athlete decided to request a tutor, he/she should be aware of the following:

  • Allow a minimum of 24 hours for your request to be filled.

  • Once the request has been filled, student-athletes should check their email for their assigned tutor, days, times, and location of the tutoring sessions. Attend the session on time.

PREPARATION

  • Before meeting with a tutor, student-athletes must try to complete the assigned reading. Also, each student-athlete must try to complete all problems assigned to the best of his or her ability.

  • Student-athletes must attend each session with their books, notes, and all relevant material.

  • Time with the tutor should be dedicated to clarifying areas that were not completed or understood.

  • The student-athlete must attend class regularly. Tutoring is not a substitute for class attendance.

  • Time with the tutor should be dedicated to clarifying areas that were not completed or understood.

  • All work submitted for grading must be completed entirely by the student-athlete.

ATTENDANCE

The following policy applies to both the mentor and subject tutor sessions.

  • If a student-athlete is unable to attend a tutor session, it is his/her responsibility to inform his or her Academic Counselor and a AAEC staff  via phone call, text message, or email of their absence at least one hour prior to the start time of the session.

LATE POLICY

  • Late arrivals may be excused under extenuating circumstances at the discretion of the AAEC, and the Academic Counselors.

  • If a student-athlete is 5-9 minutes late to any scheduled session, it will be recorded as late.

  • If a student-athlete is 10-19 minutes late to any scheduled session, it will be recorded as late.

  • If a student-athlete is 20+ minutes late, it will be recorded as a NO-SHOW and an email will be sent to the Academic Counselor, Head coach for that sport.

  •

UNEXCUSED ABSENCES

The following action(s) will result in an unexcused absence:

  • Being late by 10+ minutes three times is equivalent to one unexcused absence or a no-show.

  • Arriving at any session without class materials (books, notes, assignments, etc.)

  • Canceling or missing the session without properly notifying the AAEC , and the Academic Counselors.

CONSEQUENCES FOR ABSENCES

  • Upon the FIRST missed tutoring session, the student-athlete, his or her Academic Counselor, the director, as well as the head coach, will receive an email stating the attendance policy. It is the Academic Counselor’s responsibility to follow-up with the student-athlete and take appropriate corrective action.

  • Upon the SECOND missed tutoring session, the student-athlete, his or her Academic Counselor, the director, will receive another email stating the policy and indicating that this is the second no-show. After the second no-show, the Academic Counselor is responsible for following up with the student-athlete and coaching staff.

  • After the THIRD missed tutor session, Subject Tutoring privileges will be revoked until there is a meeting with the student-athlete, his or her coach (or designee), Academic Counselor. Tutoring services will continue to be provided, but a meeting of the above-referenced individuals will also take place. During the meeting, a tutor agreement will be created, which details expectations and consequences for the student-athlete going forward.
